Welcome to the Chemistry section of CramNow, a collection of hundreds of  FREE, self marking, A Level Chemistry multiple choice questions, and other downloadable resources. Although many questions are organised in Modules, following the OCR A Level Chemistry Specification, there will obviously be a lot of overlap of core content with the other exam boards.

You'll need to sign up for an account to access the questions.

To A Level Chemistry Students

A Level Chemistry questions require you to be able to recall significant content from memory. However, there are many numerical questions that require you to properly understand the chemistry behind the question. Practising the skills needed to answer these questions will build your confidence and allow you to understand what is being asked of you by the examiner. These quizzes are designed to help you in both of these aspects; the recall of your A Level Chemistry factual content and the development of  your confidence in being able to carry out fundamental chemical calculations. This is typically done through the medium of quick, multiple choice quizzes. There are also calculations that require an accurate answer being typed into a box.

You need to register, then you can start completing the quizzes. On completion of each A Level Chemistry quiz, you will receive an email with the question, your response and whether it was correct. You can attempt the quizzes as often as you like. You will improve with practice.

Before you start please be aware:

  • The quizzes are typically around 10 questions each.
  • There are some SIMPLE RULES regarding the entry of answers. These are available, once you're logged in, by clicking on ‘The Rules’ in the top menu. It is hoped that these rules will help you  appreciate the importance of accuracy and care when expressing numerical answers. The 'system' is very particular about how answers are entered! PLEASE READ THE RULES!
  • The questions are challenging and require you to think! There is no point only testing easy content that you already know.
  • We hope that once there is a sufficient data set of raw marks from these quizzes, your feedback email will begin to contain grade boundaries. These will be based on the average grade distribution of Y13 at the point of their A Level Chemistry exam, and are therefore aspirational.

If you forget your login details there are password reset and ‘username reset’ options at the bottom of the  login page : https://chemistry.cramnow.com/login

To A Level Chemistry Teachers

SELF MARKING HOMEWORK: These challenging multiple choice quizzes generate an email with a score which is sent to the student. Over time, our data set should permit us to also assign grades to these scores. The ‘results email’ can then be forwarded to their A Level Chemistry teacher. This means that they can also be set as self-marking homework. The instant feedback is really appreciated by the students! They can attempt to work out where they went wrong more effectively when the thinking is still fresh in their mind.

These activities may also be particularly useful during the current lockdown conditions. It could be used as evidence that students have completed their independent study.

PLENARIES / STARTERS: These quizzes can be projected onto the board as a meaningful starter or plenary activity.

SIGNING UP STUDENTS INDEPENDENTLY: There are instructions that show how to do this under ‘Getting Started’ on the top right of the tool bar, above. Students will need an email address, from which they can forward their results email to teachers. Their school email is the obvious choice for this, but as CramNow.com is a new website, you may need to contact your IT Administrators to allow the results emails through the spam filter as it is undoubtedly set to ‘Unbelievably High’.

SIGNING UP STUDENTS WHEN AT SCHOOL: We envision at the start of the next school year (whenever that is), that students could register en-mass during their first lesson. The log-in page has ‘password reset’ and ‘username reset’ functions at the bottom for when they forget.

Please note that this is a work in progress. We are adding new quizzes all the time so please check back regularly.
